MAKYO & Puff Dragon

MAKYO is a term used in Zen buddhism to refer to a world of confusing and seemingly mystical hallucinations that one can fall into during deep meditation. Our use of the name reflects our fascination with the exploration of inner space, but also the nature of our society, in which we are surrounded by layers of makyo --artificial realities, mediated realities-- which seem much more real than they are. Our music is about cutting through this illusion in a search for something pure.


MAKYO formed in 1993 with the desire to incorporate Eastern philosophies of sound and spirituality into the whole spectrum of 90s electronica. The result: zen dub, an organic electro-acoustic sound of tablas, ethereal Indian/Arab vocals, and bass. The band's brief is to ignore the barriers that exist between "live" and "electronic", "experimental" and "pop", "east" and "west", "traditional" and "modern".

GIO who writes all the music, and plays most of it-- went through a long musical evolution before arriving in Makyo. The early 80s were spent in Kyoto, studying zen by day and playing in hardcore punk bands by night. The late 80s were spent in Taipei and Boston, playing in psychedelic Branca-influenced guitar ensembles, releasing through the mail-art/cassette underground, and dj-ing a free-style radio show on WZBC.

Since 1993, Gio has been a regular dj on Tokyo's club scene, appearing mostly in chill-out rooms, and appearing with the likes of Mixmaster Morris, The Orb's Alex Patterson, Ken Ishii, Haruomi Hosono, Tsuyoshi, Underworld, Solar Quest, and more. Starting as a regular dj at Maniac Love's "White Room" in 1994, he went on to a 2-year residency in Odyssey's ambient room from 1994 thru 1996, and gigs at Gold, Yellow, Nyabinghi, Ambient Web, Key Energy, Charlie's, Mela, Deep Green, Rainbow 2000@Mt. Fuji, Aurora Psychedelica, The Pyramid, and the ultimate chill-room, Harmony, in Koh Phan Ghan, Thailand.

В 1995-м году Good после семейной драмы перебирается жить в Японию, где с надлежащим там упорством работает звукоинженером на одной из тон-студий в Токио и паралельно записывает несколько работ для британской Phantasm, шведской Spiral Trax и для немцев Spirit Zone и Plusquam. Обьехав пол-мира в качестве ди-джея - Steve всё равно раз за разом возвращается в Японию. Даже в родной Уэлс он заглядывает не так часто...
...И Good очень сильно меняется внутренне. Он забрасывает свой транс-проект и в 2003-м году начинает работу под новым псевдонимом Puff Dragon. Яркие эмоции. Ощущение бесплотных грёз наяву. Мысли древне-восточного эпоса. Полёт сказочной фантазии. Всё это Steve Good выразил в альбоме, который он делал почти три года и посвятил Sazanami своему сыну.
Японское слово "Sazanami" можно интерпретировать по-разному, но основной перевод на русский язык всё же будет "водная рябь". Практически через весь альбом очень тонкой нитью вплетена концепция "перевёрнутого звучания". Конечно, сама идея не нова, но Good очень умело комбинирует и маскирует звучание "наоборот" c жидкими и тягучими элементами даба, лёгкого лаунжа и потрясающе красивыми вставками женского вокала. Перевёрнуты мелодии. Перевёрнуты задержки, отклики, звуки. Всё сделано на таком высоком уровне, что внутренний мир слушателя начинает пульсировать в такт липкому биту треков, представленных на данном CD Puff Dragon – Sazanami.


Puff Dragon is a downtempo / ambient project from Steve Good. Originally from Wales, Steve moved to Japan in 1995, where he now lives with his son. Steve's other projects include Double Dragon ( psychedelic progressive trance ), releasing 2 full albums : Continuum on London's Phantasm Records (2000) & Transparent on Hamburg's Plusquam Records (2002) and many compilation tracks on cutting-edge trance labels like Iboga, Spiral Trax International and Flow. The Double Dragon sound was well received by the global trance party scene, and Steve has played live and DJ sets on 5 continents. Around about 2003, with a conscious effort to slow things down, Puff Dragon was born. The idea was to create relaxing music for comfortable environments - fusing fat beats with dusty loungy atmospheres, and natural tribal and ethnic textures. "Sazanami" - the 1st full Puff Dragon album was released on Dakini Records in November, 2005... I also produce bands here in Tokyo, engineer, arrange, and do the FOH sound at festivals ...
